Food Blogging

A new fad is hitting the Internet, food blogs, similar to personal blogs kept about celebrities or about ones personal life, except it is a blog with photos of what people eat during the day. For some reason it has become interesting for people to following others and what they have eaten in the past week. Perhaps this goes along with getting to know the personal life of the celeb or people in general. Usually what we see of every day people is their appearance in the public and how they act in front of other people, this unknowing of the full person and their thoughts and actions when they are alone is a part of their personal life that is interesting to the rest of us. I guess this is what makes following other peoples food blogs so interesting and even addicting.

These blogs can be used for many different reasons. One lady met her boyfriend through some one she didn't even know that was a loyal viewer of her blog. She also found that by posting pictures online of what she ate during the day for all to see, helped keep her on the right diet track. One man said it is motivational and keeps you accountable because you don't want to see that you ate an entire jar of peanut butter. One woman started because she wanted to show her mom the food she ate while on vacation, but it then turned into an addicting routine. It also acts as social networking. In many places food brings people together. Think about it, at every social event, funeral, party, wedding, baby shower, birthday ... there is food, and people love it and look forward to it.

This can be bad, however, if it becomes an obsession that interferes with careers or relationships. One man brought the wrong lens and left his wife at the table alone for an hour while he ran home or get the correct one. Some business, however, are definitely benefiting financially. Nikon realised this new trend that was taking place and added a new "food" mode which allows the food to photograph better.

Photographs of your food are very personal. The not only depict what kind of food you generally eat, but this can also tell what kind of person you are and can bring you back to a certain memory and place in time. Food enables all of your senses which has a more direct contact with your memory than a picture of a person or flower. It is said in the closing of the article that photographing food is a more accurate way of documenting your life, food isn't going to put on a special face when you take a picture of it. I believe this could be a true statement, however, I feel like any other Internet or media addiction, this kind of lifestyle could very much become a controlling part of your life, it is just difficult to say whether or not it would be positive or negative.

  1. Brittany,
I really enjoyed this post about food blogging mainly because I really hadn't heard about it before, besides maybe like Julie and Julia which is food blogging in a similar fashion, but I really find it fascinating. The sociology behind food is so interesting because while consuming food is mainly a biological necessity to keep us alive, the social interactions behind eating are a major part of our society.

I love food, but mostly I love sharing a meal with friends and family. This food blogging has added a media aspect to eating, because now one can not only share a meal with friends and family, but they can share a meal with anyone in the whole world who decides to check out their blog! It's really crazy, and adds a whole new sociological layer to eating.
